THE ANNUAL 4TH OF JULY
BEACH BASH AT LAKE SHERWOOD

BITTERSWEET JULY
1st the sweet: Birthday Madness

The month always starts with Steve's Birthday. We all enjoyed an organic taco bar from Don and Renee's shopping adventures. I never
knew soy came in so may varieties! I believe Steve's wish came true when his family arrived last month. His birthday treat was a trip to Brown vs Board National Historical Site. Steve loves Topeka and the rich history of the Heartland. Me, not so much.
It was daily family competition with the Angel boys on site. We all enjoyed jazz and Cajun food before a night at the adult arcade, DAVE AND BUSTERS @ LEGENDS No one could keep up with the boys or their intensity. The jokes kept rolling as the boys found ways to poke each other regularly.
With the kids have gone it is time to party with the folks. We spent a day in Kansas City. We visited the new Power and Light District just as they were taking down the weekend Art festival! (Saved some money there!)The next adventure was the City Market, where the weather was perfect and we got to eat outside at the new Bo Lings, (which used to be the Asian market.) Both Asian Markets have moved across the E. street into a huge factory building. It is a museum of
art, china, treasures and food. We also took in "Seeds" and the Steamship Arabia.Too soon it was time to say Good Bye to our California family. With a promise to do this more often than once a decade.

We are home in time for the annual Beach BBQ and Parade at the Lake. Steve and I work the event every year as community service. Steve is the hit of the Hot Dogs, (which he won't eat!) This is the first year we didn't have any kids at the events so we got a little cheeky. This is the yearly event where we can see our neighbors all at once and get caught up. Even the college kids come home for this one. This year we had evening dinner, with other empty nesters, at the Matthews and took everyone out on the boat for fireworks after. It was a perfect night for July 4th.

Anna and Tim Lippold left on their vacation July 5th (Happy Birthday Kirt.) We heard on the 9th that they arrived safely and were having a good time at the resort in LV. The weather reports say it is in the 100+ temps all week so they should be well done by the time they return. I am not a desert person but I love the dry heat.
With so much with silence in the house, we need a
ROAD TRIP!
Off to Lincolnto see the Ord Gang for the Liz Estudillo/Marty Chaffe wedding. A gathering of 400 and so understated it seemed like a small intimate family affair Liz and Ma
rty's first real Kiss It was truly a tribute to parents, family and faith. Liz had all her siblings in the black and white theme wedding, which made for 18 in the wedding party. As an aspiring art teacher, Liz made many of the beautiful arrangements. It is priceless to see a young couple hold high moral standards and accomplish their goals together. This was a wonderful example of honoring free agency even though it was not a condition of church covenant!

ick at Haymarket The reception was held at the Lincoln Station in the Haymarket District by UNL campus. Very few of the spot light games were displayed, even the cake cutting was subtle. We were invited to sit at the family table. They had a Jazz group that played the old favorites of the 40's and 50's. I hea
rd my parents' love song and our wedding song "It had to be You." We even got a visit from "Elvis." It was a great time. The newly weds left early to spend their first night together in a condo near the Haymarket. They left the next morning for a Honeymoon in Chicago. They are both graduates of UNL and plan to teach this yr. After the reception, family packed in the Estudillo hotel room and renewed friendships, ate p
izza and laughed until we passed out. The girls were out long before the boys! The kids played Pitch, which seemed a lot like hearts. Tim is a fierce card player.
Farmer's market at Lincoln Station

The day of the wedding we visited the UNL campus (Chemistry Dept, of course) The day after we met up with Rick and Carol to visit the largest Farmer's Market we have ever seen. There were vendors of all kinds and it went for 2 blocks, both sides of the street! I got the coolest pair of earrings with a matching necklace. (Titanium mirror + they change colors) The market lines up by the train cars and (fake)water tower. They even had a live bluegrass/gospel group playing while you shop. It was fun. The whole gang went to Craig's for lunch and the boys headed to the golf course to play a round with the Chaffe boys. I napped! When Steve returned we headed back to Topeka. . . . Our faith renewed.
The whole weekend took exactly 6 gallons of gas!! SO go ahead and laugh at my little gay car!
Now the BITTERpart,
Once we returned, it was time to say goodbye to my BFF Twin, Julie O. Her house has sold and she is off to Utah. We have been best friends for 14 years this fall. Although we are different in many ways, we are Siamese at heart. We have served on the same callings, been visiting teaching companions, road warriors and worked at the same place. She taught me about quilting and my children music. We parted the same way we began, eating and laughing. Jules is much more gifted, intelligent and talented than I but we share everything. Now BYU will enjoy her
talents in University Research and her husband in the Band, where her son will be the drum major this fall. She is currently closing on a new house and waiting for the arrival of her 6th grandchild in a few weeks. It is good they are now able to be close to their wonderful children , enjoy the milestones of their grandchildren and especially partake in the blessings of the church. They will be close to the Provo temple and get to share in sessions with children now, (but I will really miss her.) We are looking forward to seeing each other in August when she returns to close her Kansas house.
